Notices for Cast Below

Press Release, November 4th, 2011
E.N.S.S., Theatre Program, Musical

Guys and Dolls are comin’ to town!  But not until April.  It’s ‘musical season’ again for the students and staff of East Northumberland Secondary School and production is already well underway.  Casting for roles, which began last May, was completed in mid-September and the troupe includes a number of seasoned ‘veterans,’ as well as some very promising first timers.
“There are close to fifty young men and ladies we’re working with this year,” says Paul Hussey, teacher, director and choreographer.  Included in the line-up are Amanda Baker and Nicole Lance, who play the lead female roles, and who are also both members of the school’s student government.
Guys and Dolls is a classic musical, originally composed in 1950 by Frank Loesser, based on a couple short stories written by Damon Runyon.  With the change-up of a couple songs, the musical was brought to the big screen in 1955 and starred Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons.  The story revolves around the shenanigans of professional New York gamblers, riding a thin line between pleasing their dolls and not getting ‘trapped’ into marriage, as well as avoiding the ‘heat’ and locating the best crap-shooting game in town!
“Our last two productions had a decidedly cartoon-bend.  And the response from the community was very good, but we wanted to try something a little more serious this time.  Having said that, we ended up choosing another comedy,” notes Phill Kinzinger, teacher and producer.  “It’s been a while – perhaps as far back as 1990, when Sharon Caswell tackled South Pacific – since we’ve done something from the golden age of cinematic musicals.”
The music for Guys and Dolls includes some well-known American favourites, including “Luck be a Lady Tonight,” which became a staple for Frank Sinatra.  The first piece of music, “Fugue for Tin Horns,” is a challenging piece shared by seasoned E.N.S.S. student vocalists Mike Osvald, Will Bartley and Taran Schubert.  “It’s a really cool way to start the play… we have to really focus when we’re singing, ‘cause the song is tricky,” says Taran.
“The pit band will be on stage, in behind the action again,” says Bruce Tonkin, musical director. “About half of the band members are community members who are sharing their talent with the students.  We’ve even pulled in former E.N.S.S. principal Don Dawson, who plays the trombone.”
Guys and Dolls will run from April 24 to May 5, 2012.

Guys and Dolls.

As it stands, we are well underway with vocal and staging practices, and set design. We look forward to working with parents and members of the community, who would like to share their expertise, ideas and time.  Any such people are asked to contact Phill Kinzinger (the producer), who can help identify areas of need and facilitate the volunteering process.

Cast are reminded to constantly double check their schedules for practices dates and times.  And ... if scheduling problems exist, you must contact Mr. Kinzinger, Hussey or Tonkin to discuss the situation.

For those students who are checking, Mr. Hussey has decided to go ahead with today's rehearsal.  Students are advised to exercise care when driving on winter roads, travel slowly if your local roads are partly snow covered.  If you show up somewhat late due to road conditions this is expected.  Please call my cell phone at (613) 919-0187 if you are unable to make the practice.

From the look of it, the ploughs have been out in good force since the snow finished yesterday and therefore, though we lost last night's dance.... practice is a go ahead today.  See you at 8.55!
