February is Black History MonthThere is a rehearsal for School song today at lunch in the dance studio. All members must attend please. 

 February is Black History Month and along with many additional learning opportunities around the school, each day we will be sharing a piece of world history with you on the announcements. We begin by introducing you to the word, Sankofa. This is an ancient ancestral word from the Akan people of Ghana. It Means “Going to take it back” or “Go back for it again”. This word is symbolized by the image of a mythical bird with it’s feet planted forward, but it’s head turned backwards with an egg in it’s mouth. Sankofa is a call to look to the past. To rediscover the things that were great and understand the past so you can forge a better future. We hope to embrace this term throughout the month of February, as we highlight the contributions from the Black community in Canada and around the world. Our focus this February is to show and remember that Black history is world history.

Today we are highlighting the contributions of activist, Claudette Colvin

Nine months before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, then 15-year-old Claudette Colvin did the same. On March 2, 1955, Colvin was taking the bus home from high school when the driver ordered her to give up her seat.). Colvin refused, saying she paid her fare and it was her constitutional right, but was then arrested by two police officers. Colvin later became the main witness in the federal lawsuit Browder v. Gayle, which ended segregation on public transportation in Alabama.

Today we are remembering a great Canadian inventor. Born in Colchester, Ontario, to parents who had escaped from slavery in Kentucky and arrived in Canada via the Underground Railroad, Elijah McCoy showed an early interest in machines and tools and an aptitude for mechanics. He developed and patented a particular type of lubricating cup that dripped oil onto the moving parts of a train while it was in motion. While the origin of the expression is probably somewhat older, it is said that buyers of the lubricating oil cup asked specifically for the “Real McCoy” because it was extremely reliable and they wanted no substitutes. That was just one of the products he developed and patented. For example, in response to his wife’s desire for an easier way to iron clothes, he invented and patented the portable ironing board.

James Mercer Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. One of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Growing up in a series of Midwestern towns, Hughes became a prolific writer at an early age. He moved to New York City as a young man, where he made his career. His poetry and fiction portrayed the lives of the working-class blacks in America, lives he portrayed as full of struggle, joy, laughter, and music. Permeating his work is pride in the African-American identity and its diverse culture. He confronted racial stereotypes, protested social conditions, and expanded African America's image of itself; a "people's poet" who sought to re-educate both audience and artist by lifting the theory of the black aesthetic into reality.

Today we honour the work of Oscar Peterson who was a Canadian jazz pianist, composer and educator and who is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, on August 15, 1925. He was raised in the poor St. Henri neighbourhood of Montreal, also known as Little Burgundy. Oscar began playing trumpet and piano at age 5. He focused solely on piano at age 8 following a year-long battle with tuberculosis. Throughout his career, Peterson recorded more than 200 albums and received numerous awards, including eight Grammy Awards. He collaborated with many other jazz musicians, including Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald. Peterson is among the handful of jazz greats who resided outside the United States throughout his career.

Pink Shirt Day is today. Pink Shirt Day began in 2007 when a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. It has since been recognized annually worldwide as a day to stand against bullying.

Pink Shirt Day encourages everyone to be inclusive, welcoming and supportive, Kindness goes a long way.

In  less than 2 months, ENSS will be opening the curtains on another fabulous performance. This years production of Matilda still needs certain crew members. In particular Mr. Turner and Mr. Kinzinger, who serve as ‘house masters’ are looking for a group of dedicated students to work as ushers, escorting people to their seats and doing a variety of other small tasks during performances. There is a meeting to be held this coming Tuesday, March 7th, at the start of lunch in room 217 where Mr. Turner and Mr. Kinzinger will be taking names of people who are interested in being ushers. And you get volunteer hours for this!

2. This week ENSS competed at OFSAA wrestling in Ottawa, a three-day event. Jordyn Newbery represented our school, and made it to the final day of competitions, placing in the top 10 wrestlers in her bracket. Excellent job Jordyn, at representing the dragons at OFSAA and thank you to all wrestlers who competed this season!

1. Tomorrow - March 21st is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.  Supporting this day is easy - Simply wear some fun and funky socks or fuzzy socks or striped socks or  mix matched socks.  Join us tomorrow to celebrate World Down Syndrome Awareness Day and wear your funky socks!

4. Tomorrow is Friday, March 31 which is Transgender Day of Visibility. This day is important to recognize the experiences transgender people go through every day, and to know the history of their struggles.

April 14

1. Track and field practice after school today for distance runners and anyone who wants to run on a 4 by 100 m relay team.  Meet at the bleachers.
2. There is a Sr Girls soccer scrimmage at lunch today in gym a/b.
3. LLS Bake Sale! Delicious chocolate chip cookies are on sale for the low, low price of 50 cents at lunch today in front of room 250. These tasty treats are baked each week by the talented team of Arthur Dunnett, Nick Quick, Patrick Senger, Alex Desson, and Will Metson.
4. Congratulations to the Jr Badminton Team on their outstanding performance at Pre-Bay of Quinte.  They all played with determination, skill, and great sportsmanship.  They made ENSS proud! 

Jawin Jeyapirakas and Alex Pender placed 4th in boys doubles coming back from the brink of elimination.

Shyloh Neal played excellent 3 set matches to come 4th in girls singles.

Cael Hussey played amazing and placed 3rd in boys singles in a very competitive field.

Gracie Davis and Cadence Tait finished second in girls doubles dominating their final match!

Phoebe and Charlie Mooney placed second in mixed doubles with awesome effort and great celebrations!

Vaughn Cocek and Ben Van Egmond placed second after narrowly missing first in an incredible three set match !

Kate Andrews and Eli Veenstra played amazing and placed first in mixed doubles !!! 

All of these players are advancing to Bay of Quinte at Quinte Christian next week!

1. Today is VOTING DAY.  Period 1 teachers have been given their voting envelopes with specific instructions and ballots (one for each student).  Please read the instructions carefully.   There will be a student Government member coming to classes starting at 9:00 to collect your Voting Envelopes.  

Thank you in advance to teachers for giving students an opportunity to vote for their cabinet for next year.  

Any students with a period 1 SPARE or Morning COOP students can get their ballot at the main office with Ms. Richards.  

Voting is closed at 11:30am today.

1.There will be a meeting today at lunch in room 222 for Sr. Girls soccer players and any Jr players who did not attend the meeting yesterday. Please, please, pretty please bring your permission forms!

Hello Blue Dragons - Starting next week you will notice that your teacher has a magical bead on a bracelet or a necklace.  This bead is for our annual game of Rock - Paper - Scissors.  Teachers will be challenging each other to a game of Rock,Paper,Scissors for their bead. The winner of the round will win a bead - the loser of the round will lose a bead.  The object of this game is to win the round of Rock,Paper,Scissors and therefore win beads from others.  The champion will be the person with the most beads on Thursday April 28th.  

Oh - and Student Government is also playing -  but they have special beads that are 3 times more powerful than the regular teacher bead.  Teachers can only challenge a Student Government member if they have 3 beads to bargain with!

1.A reminder to the Sr Boys Volleyball Team of their Photo at the beginning of lunch tomorrow in Gym AB.  Please be prompt so we can get our photo taken for the yearbook!  Please bring any borrowed jerseys that you have not returned.  

2. Last Friday was our first Anything but a backpack day… students were quite creative - it was tough to determine the winner.. But it has been determined that the winners are: Calem Brown, Zack Jobin, Jordyn Newberry and a student who (I forget his name) but brought his golf bag as a backpack alternative! 

Winners can come to the COOP Department at lunch and pick up your prize from Miss. Leger!

4. Today is the start of the first annual ROCK PAPER SCISSORS TOURNAMENT!  

During period 3 teachers will distribute 2 beads on a string to all students in class.  There are instructions and rules inside the package - Period 3 teachers- PLEASE READ the rules to your students. 

→ When you receive your beads, you must display it as a necklace or a bracelet (must be visible at all times).  

→ As soon as you receive your beads,  you can challenge any other student, teacher or a Student Government member, to a game of ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’.  

→ Only use the beads provided by Student Government 

→ The game continues all week and ends Friday, May 19th at 2:20.  

→ The winner will be announced the week of May 22nd.

1. May 18 is Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. In recognition of this important day, we commemorate the victims of this genocide, and honour the survivors and their families. We recognize the lasting pain and trauma this conflict continues to have on Tamils in our community and beyond.

On the morning of Wednesday May 31st, we will be hosting our second Mindfulness Exploration, ME day, in the library. We will have a guest speaker joining us to talk about kindness, and spend the rest of the morning exploring various tools and strategies to improve mindfulness in our everyday lives. Students can pick up permission forms in the library, with limited spaces available. Permission forms must be signed by period 1 and 2 teachers and returned to Ms. Darling in the library to be able to attend this event.

1. Today at lunch the DNA group will be meeting  in room 207 next to the culinary room.This group is a welcoming space for all students. We focus on creating safer spaces for 2Spirit, LGBTQ+ folks and their allies. Bring your lunch and a friend and meet us in room 207. In today’s meeting, we’ll be continuing our preparations for ENSS’s pride week celebration. If you would like to be involved, come on out!  New members are always welcome. Hope to see you there!
